Platform Bèta Techniek: a broad approach
It is not simply about 15% more beta technicians. It is about working to create talent for the future: more beta technicians who have broader competencies, and increased affinity with science and technology in the entire population. It is also about more effective deployment of the talented professionals already in the job market. Particular attention is paid to women and ethnic minorities. A broad approach is needed.
The approach is divided into programme lines that correspond to the stages of education and employment that young people encounter:
More knowledge, better profile and increased cooperation
Accurate insights into what drives young people are needed to arrive at the right approach. What motivates young people? What attracts them to education? How do they see their careers, and what presents an interesting challenge? What advantages and obstacles do they see to choosing science and technology?
By finding new ways of looking at science and technology, we can create challenging perspectives that will motivate larger groups of students to choose this direction. This field is already experiencing major developments. Accordingly, the Platform aims to cooperate as much as possible with other players operating in this field. We identify appealing and successful projects in schools and businesses and work to expand them. In that context, we primarily look for commitment from the boards and management in education, business and government. That guarantees sustainability in the approach and the results.
Involvement and inspiration
Innovation is about activating and involving all the relevant players in institutes and businesses: the decision-makers and the doers. There should be no lone wolves in the workplace and no paper tigers at the top. Actual results can only be achieved when education and business work together to create innovations. This requires direct relations between businesses and schools. Results are only sustainable if schools and businesses invest in the approach. A career-driven mindset in students and young employees is crucial. After all, it is partly about increasing the numbers of beta technicians, but also about broadening the scope of science and technology by creating new connections and building bridges between the world of science and technology and other fields. That is the challenge for the future.
